It was believed to be transmitted by touch and resulted in the patients being shunned and despised.
In this backdrop, it was but compassion and leadership that shone through Princess Diana’s gesture of shaking hands with a patient without gloves when she went to inaugurate the first unit (in the UK) dedicated to treating people with HIV and AIDS.
